Breakaway Inc. is a community respite house supporting people with disabilities and their families, in the Redcliffe, Cabooluture and Pine Rivers areas. Breakaway provides overnight respite for individuals with high support needs.

We are a non-profit organisation managed by a Management Committee of 8 people, comprising of;

  • Chairperson
  • Vice Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • 4 other Committee members whom are representative of the parents.
Breakaway receives recurrent funding through Disability Services Queensland.

The Services Provided by Breakaway include:
  • Centre based overnight support
  • Centre based emergency support
  • In home support
  • Emergency in home support
  • Brokerage for in home support
  • Parent support and networking
  • Post school lifestyle programs

Hours of Operation:
Breakaway operates 24 hours per day for 49 weeks per year. Breakaway closes for one week in July and two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of Breakaway Inc. is to provide quality care, mutual respect and support for families of people with disabilities in a warm, safe, family environment.

Philosophy
At Breakaway Inc. we believe:
  • In quality support for all family members;
  • That every person who is involved with Breakaway is integral to Breakaway's life;
  • In valuing the uniqueness of each individual;
  • That families of people with disabilities know their needs;
  • That Breakaway's development is guided by the changing needs of families and their members;
  • In valuing the information that people with disabilities have about themselves;
  • That families of people with disabilities are valuable and an integral part of the local community.
Breakaway's goals are to achieve:
Ongoing flexible support for people with disabilities and their families, offering quality care and mutual respect, enhancing persons with disabilities lifestyle and lessening the impact of the disability on the family.

The objectives of Breakaway are to:
  • Provide a service which is flexible and accessible geographically, financially and physically;
  • Provide a safe, physical environment to minimise risk to guests and staff;
  • Provide practices and structures which allow families and people with disabilities to have input into planning, operation and evaluation;
  • Provide warmth in terms of attitudes of care, protectiveness, respect for individual dignity and worth;
  • Provide a service which respects privacy and confidentiality.
In pursuing these objectives, Breakaway will provide:
A flexible, responsive service to meet the changing, individual needs of guests and families by:
  • Offering centre based respite; Offering in home respite where it is the most appropriate response to individual needs;
  • Meeting needs in a way which respects each guests individuality;
  • Ensuring guests daily routines are adhered to as closely as possible to ensure the least possible disruption to schooling, work and recreation;
  • Encouraging mutual support between families, guests and staff; Linking families and guests to community resources;
  • Providing opportunities for guests and families to enhance their quality of life; Supporting families in crisis situations;
  • Supporting families or other primary caregivers in their role;
  • Ensure that the service operates in an effective, efficient and accountable manner.
Target Group
Breakaway provides a respite service for persons aged 0 - 65 years who have high support needs. All applications will be considered by the Coordinator according to the criteria below:
  • Adults or children with disabilities who live in the Redcliffe, Caboolture and Pine Rivers areas, or who use generic services based on the Redcliffe Peninsula;
  • People with multiple disabilities and/or high support needs;
  • Number of people with a disability in the family;
  • Access to other services;
  • Family situation (single parent, health, emergency, siblings, etc).
